THE BROWN HEART OF ASIA

The Brown Heart of Asia is a triptych that brings us human stories, from three countries with three different religions, three different cultures but one common drug: heroin. The first part is dedicated to Central Asia: Tajikistan, about the discovery of its geography and the social situation and capillarity of heroin, and Bam (Iran), through heroin abuse after the earthquake and the international traffic from Afghanistan; the third part is about Italy and the Blue Moon operation, during which heroin was sold at extremely low prices in order to stop the protests of the youth related to the growing spectrum of Italian communism.

Is heroin today a matter of state?

Tajikistan is the poorest republic of the former Soviet Union but with a porous 1,300-km border with northern Afghanistan, it is at the heart of a multi-billion-dollar network smuggling heroin. In Pamir, an autonomous region, with its special language and a strong cultural identity, we will meet Kheiribek, 41 year-old. He is sitting near the river and looks to Afghanistan. Here stand all of his nicest memories. Since he started injecting drug his life became a nightmare. He tells about his defeats, fights, his strength for life and the condition of being a survivor.

Bam is a devastated city by the earthquake and following the strong shock of 2003 a large percentage of the population began to use heroin to overcome the trauma. Reza, Mahdie, Manoucher tell us about their life as a drug addicts in Iran and the political ambiguities in front of this national issue, american sanctions and international traffic coming from Afghanistan.

Italy: In 1970 Italian and American secret services coordinated the “Blue Moon Operation” during which heroin was sold at extremely low prices in order to stop the protests of the youth related to the growing spectrum of Italian communism. The friends and families of Fausto and Iaio, two young left contestants killed by strangers in 1978 tell us their memories of this period. Fausto and Iaio were working on a book about heroin in Milan. Today heroin addiction resurfaces in Italy, Rogoredo is one of the largest open-air drug market place in Europe. Is the return of heroine today underestimated?

SU BATTILEDDU

In the heart of Sardinia there is a subregion called Barbagia,
where the life is marked by seasonal rhythms and turns round
solisticial feasts, agro-pastoral activities and the the voice of the people.
The geographic isolation preserved the ancient rites,
the same that take place during the sardinian carnival,
known as Carrasegare
